Lady Indians Claim First District Crown Since Y2K

GRAY, Tenn. – The last time the Dobyns-Bennett softball team won a district tournament title, boy bands like Backstreet Boys and NSYNC had captured the cultural zeitgeist in America. Smartphones did not exist. And when it came time to watch your favorite TV show, you either had to catch it live or … get this… program your VCR to tape it. The display of softball on Saturday at Daniel Boone would have been worth committing to video cassette, assuming people still used video cassettes. As it is, it was plenty memorable, especially for the Tribe, who bounced back from a 1-0 loss to Boone to defeat the Trailblazers 6-3 and claim their first district crown since 2000. “We're senior-laden and they know this is their last time to make a run,” Lady Indians coach Andy Hubbard said. D-B had finished as district runner-up to Boone in each of the past two seasons. The Trailblazers also have reached the state tournament in back-to-back-to-back years, advancing all the way to the championship round in 2023. “When the state runner up is coming out of your conference, it makes it tough. So it’s sweet to get a conference title because it's hard to come by,” Lady Indians pitching coach Mike Sweeney said. The Lady Indians (28-11) also earned the right to host their Region 1-4A semifinal on Monday against Jefferson County, the District 2 runner-up. Boone (23-12) travels to play District 2 champion Morristown West. Those two winners reconvene Wednesday for the regional title and also will be guaranteed spots in the state sectionals on Friday. D-B came into the game needing just one win to secure the tournament title. Kyleigh Bacon changed that with a single swing of the bat in the top of the seventh, clouting a solo home run to left. “As soon as she hit it, we knew,” Boone coach Jeremy Jenkins said. Kaylea Osborne, who rotated with Ava Saul in the circle throughout the first game, worked a perfect bottom of the seventh to ensure it would take at least seven more innings of softball to crown a district champion. Julianne Tipton meanwhile went the distance for D-B but needed some time to reset mentally prior to the second contest. Tipton, and the rest of the Lady Indians, ended up getting a major emotional boost from sophomore Allie McConnelee. “She said, ‘We're not playing for third place. We are still playing for first place. Don’t take this more lightly than it has to be,’ ” Tipton said. “I feel like that's huge from a sophomore. As the senior leader, you're supposed to always be hyped and have faith in your team and you always do. But also, I need time to decompress after things. And I feel like if I had time to decompress, and Allie wouldn't have been there, we wouldn't have played as well in that second game as we did.” McConnelee admitted she can come on strong at times when communicating with her fellow Lady Indians. “I can be a lot sometimes but I just think it's better to be a lot than be nothing,” she said. McConnelee was definitely something in the second game, making a major difference inside the lines. She was pivotal to a hot start at the plate for D-B, which scored two runs in each of the first three innings to build a 6-1 lead. “We came out hyped and ready to swing,” Tipton said. Half of those six runs came courtesy of McConnelee. She tripled home Hailey Porter in the first inning, then, in the second with the bases loaded, lofted a soft line drive that dropped in right field for a double and scored two more runs. Starting inside the circle, she went five innings, scattering three runs on six hits and a walk while tallying three strikeouts. Sweeney said McConnelee gave the Tribe exactly what was needed from inside the circle: pitches that initiated contact and led to quick outs. Tipton replaced McConnelee in the bottom of the sixth although the sophomore wanted to finish. “Of course she's a gamer; she didn't want to come out of the game,” Sweeney said. Tipton worked around a couple of walks, preserving her team’s three-run lead and notching the save to cap a performance across the entire tournament that reaped MVP honors for the Arizona State signee. Working in the circle in each of the four games for D-B in the district tournament, Tipton tallied three complete games and 28 total strikeouts with a pair of wins. Hubbard credited Sweeney for managing the pitching staff: “He does the hard part. He deals with the personalities of the pitchers. I can't do that.” Jenkins managed the workload of his Boone hurlers by maintaining that rotation, finally giving way to Osborne to pitch the final four innings of the if-necessary game. That choice came after Saul surpassed the 200-pitch mark, when counting her totals from Saturday’s championship doubleheader and her complete game in Friday’s 2-1 triumph over Science Hill in the consolation bracket finals. There were only four total hits in the first game, two by each team. Saul and Sadie Henson each tallied a pair of singles in the second game to account for four of the six Boone knocks. “I'm proud to death of our group,” Jenkins said. “We knew coming in it was gonna be tough but I thought our kids really battled hard.” McConnelee, Sophie Dean, and Riley McMillan joined Tipton on the all-tournament team. Hubbard was quick to note how he got contributions from all over the roster during the tournament. Peyton Moore, for example, made an excellent running catch to end the top of the seventh in the first game. She legged out a bunt single in the if-necessary game and eventually came around to score a crucial insurance run. Indiya Bristol, the flex player, made multiple key catches in right field during the later innings as D-B was trying to hang on and capture the tournament crown. “It was a total team effort. Caitie Zani hit a triple against Science Hill, scored the winning run. Claudia Maness hit a sacrifice fly; without that, we wouldn't have even been here.” There is no telling how far D-B will go but the Lady Indians know where they go next: back home to Indian Highland Park for the region semifinal with Jefferson County. Science Hill, Daniel Boone Fall in Region 1-AAAA Openers

It’ll be an all-District 2 affair for the Region 1-AAAA title Saturday afternoon after Sevier County and Morristown West rolled by Science Hill and Daniel Boone Friday evening at Wild West Park. Matching up against the Hilltoppers in a region contest for a fourth time in his career, Smoky Bear left-hander Brady Scott evened his personal score with an 8-2 victory in the opener while Trojan right-hander Paxton Seal limited the ‘Blazers to just three hits in a 12-2 five inning thumping. Scott, a Walters State signee, struck out ten and scattered nine hits, but walked just one. “Brady pitched the way we expected him to pitch,” said Sevier County coach Casey Taylor. “He’s good guys. He’s a winner. He is a guy that we rely on, trust, feel comfortable with. “That’s a good (Science Hill) line-up. Tennessee Tech, ETSU guys, Walters State kids. That shows you how good Scott is to keep those guys in check. He thrives in those moments.” Scott also gave the Smoky Bears the early lead with a two-run single in the first. “One of our objectives coming in was to score first…at all costs,” added Taylor. “If that meant we had to give up some outs to advance some runners, if that meant we had to gamble with some decisions and take some shots, we were going to try to find a way to get on the board first.” The Bears blew the game open with four runs in the fourth, chasing starter Major Osbolt in the process. The ‘Toppers managed just one more run off Scott the rest of the way. “When you give (Scott) a lead like that, it makes it even tougher,” said Science Hill coach Ryan Edwards. “We’ve faced him every year since his freshman season. I think he beat us his freshman year and we had to fight and scrap and pitch really well to beat him the other years. Today, he got the best of us for sure.” The only thing Scott wasn’t able to do was record the final out, running out of pitches with a 1-1 count on Osbolt in the sixth. “To be sure we didn’t screw it up, we held him right under (120),” cautioned Taylor. “You could tell he was aware out there in the final inning.” The ‘Toppers were also keeping a wary eye on the toss count of relievers Hagan Gibson, Austin Denham and Sam Royston, none of which went past the mark that would rendered them ineligible today. Sam Lane, Jackson Berry and Josh Marmo all had two hits for Science Hill. Lucas Dye and Marmo drove in the two ‘Topper runs. Sevier County rapped out 14 hits in the win, three each coming in the first, third and fourth innings. Karsen Martin and rifle-armed catcher Bridger Hamilton collect three apiece. Martin tripled, drove in one run and scored three times while Hamilton scored twice. In the nightcap, the Trojans scored five runs in the third and fourth innings to run-rule the ‘Blazers. Boone starter Brayden Blankenship departed after the third, having allowed the first six runs. “Blankenship is not 100% and I think that’s pretty obvious,” said Boone coach Scott Hagy. “He gave us everything he had. We put some young kids in there hoping to keep them off-balance a little bit. They didn’t throw strikes and we let it get away.” Meanwhile, Seal worked out of a bases-loaded, no-out jam in the top of the first, limiting Boone to a single run. Seal struck out nine, walked three and hit one. “Paxton was outstanding,” said Morristown West coach Justin Pickett. “I knew if we could establish the breaking ball and pitch to both sides of the plate, we were in pretty good shape with his velocity. His off-speed stuff allows his velocity to really jump up.” A Chandler Justice ground out scored the Boone run in the first. Jackson Utsman roped a solo homer in the fourth West leadoff hitter Gavin Mitchell reached on all four trips, going 3-for-3 with a walk, and scoring three runs. Malakhi Isom and Seal also drove in a pair of runs. Bryson Shepard homered in the third. Morristown West (26-7) and Sevier County (23-8) will meet at noon Saturday for the Region 1-4A title. The Trojans have won three of the four meetings this season. Science Hill (30-11) and Daniel Boone (21-9) will meet in an elimination game at 3:00 p.m. The winner will also need to defeat the West-Sevier loser at 6:00 p.m. to claim the region runner-up spot and the second spot in next week’s sectional round. “We’ve got the pitcher to make a run at this,” said Science Hill’s Edwards. The ‘Toppers have won three of five games against the ‘Blazers this season. The home teams has won each of the five as well. “We’ve got our guys that we are planning on throwing tomorrow,” noted Boone’s Hagy. “Obviously, we know who we are facing. We’ll see on a neutral field how this thing pans out. Both of us are pretty good on our fields, but this is neutral, so we’ll see.” Sevier County 8, Science Hill 2 Sevier County2014001-- 8 14 0 Science Hill0010010-- 2 9 1 Sevier County – Brady Scott, Analin Floyd (7) and Bridger Hamilton; Sevier County – Major Osbolt, Hagan Gibson (4), Austin Denham (5), Sam Royston (6) and Aiden Vemillion. Slagle Pitches Elizabethton Past Volunteer in Region Opener

GREENEVILLE, Tenn. – Sophomore Rhett Slagle pitched a two-hitter as Elizabethton opened the Region 1-AAA baseball tournament with a 5-2 win against Volunteer on Friday evening at Tusculum University. The Cyclones (15-17) will play Greeneville (21-12) at noon on Saturday for the regional title. It’s the Cyclones’ first region championship appearance since Texas Rangers outfielder Evan Carter was a junior in 2019. The winner will secure a sectional berth while the loser will play at approximately 6 p.m. against the David Crockett-Volunteer winner for the second sectional berth. Elizabethton picked up where it left off after winning the district tournament. “I think a lot of people look at our record and go, ‘Ooh, they’re getting hot at the right time,’” Elizabethton coach Ryan Presnell said. “No, we’ve played a really tough schedule – and that’s my fault. And I did it because I want to win these games. I don’t want to be sitting home right now. I don’t want to lose these games. “So I’ve got to push these kids during the year, and the big thing about them – they’ve allowed me to push them. They’ve let me coach them. They’ve let me challenge them without breaking them or getting down or giving up.” Slagle, a sturdy-built sophomore, with mid- to upper-80s velocity, struck out 11 while allowing two hits and one walk in seven innings. “He’s a great pitcher,” Elizabethton teammate Bryson Rowland said. “He’s hard to hit. He’s given guys trouble all season. We do live ABs in the fall and he just carves us up. He trusts his stuff.” Rowland wasn’t getting carved up Friday. He went 3-for-4 with two triples, two runs and two RBIs. His two-run triple gave the Cyclones a 5-1 lead in the bottom of the sixth. Rowland pulled 1-0 fastball into right-center field for the clutch two-run triple. “I wanted to jump on that fastball, and he gave up to me and I did it,” Rowland said. “I’m just trying to stay calm at the plate and not letting it get too big for the moment. I’m just staying calm, staying cool and sticking to what I’ve done all year.” The Cyclones took a 1-0 lead when Rowland led off the bottom of the third inning with a triple down the first base line and scored on ensuing batter J.D. Hooks’ double into the left field corner. The Falcons tied the score, 1-1, in the fifth. Anthony Blasini reached on a one-out single and courtesy runner Jameson Mowell advanced to third thanks to a hit batsman and an error before scoring on Blayklie Broussard’s suicide-squeeze bunt. Volunteer had three runners reach in the seventh, including Gavin Hickernell, who’s one-out RBI single brought the tying run to the plate. But Slagle beared down and struck out the next two batters to end it. “He’s a good arm, man,” Volunteer coach Josh Peterson said. “He’s a guy that comes in and fills the zone up. He can run it up … sometimes high to mid-80s. He throws the breaking ball effectively. He keeps guys off balance. … “That was the first time we saw him and he was everything I thought he would be. You’re not gonna be the No. 1 on Ryan Presnell’s staff – when he gives you that title you’re a pretty good guy.” Elizabethton’s three-run sixth began with a leadoff single from Logan Campell. Jeriah Griffin and Jack Blevins followed with back-to-back bunt singles to load the bases with none out. The speedy Griffin’s bunt single came for the second time in a week when a harried fielder tried to bare-hand his bunt. “I would really like to see Jeriah and Evan Carter in a footrace,” Presnell said. “I think it would be a very interesting 60-yard dash.” Campbell was 2-for-3 with a run for the Cyclones. Williams allowed four earned runs in six innings for Volunteer. Peterson, a three-sport standout at Unaka, played baseball at Tennessee and Milligan University. Presnell, a standout at Elizabethton, played baseball at Furman. Presnell recalled being a counselor at the Boys Club when Peterson was five or six years old. “I watched him grow up,” Presnell said. “His mom and dad are dear people, good Carter County folks, man. He’s doing a great job with that program, to look at where they are this year versus where they were two or three years prior. He’s got good kids that are coachable. You can see the way they executed to get that run with the squeeze play, I mean, they know what they’re doing. And they play good defense. The pitchers throw strikes. “It’s indicative of good coaching. He’s done a great job with that program and I would expect him to make some more noise tomorrow, for sure.” Peterson considers Presnell a guru of sorts. “There’s nobody I look up to more mentor wise – just the way he coaches, the way he is, the persona he gives off,” Peterson said. “He’s somebody I look up to and somebody I’ve learned a lot from. You know, win or lose, anytime you can coach against somebody that’s had an impact on your life like that, it’s pretty awesome.” Volunteer will play David Crockett at approximately 3 p.m. “Hopefully, it’ll be a long day tomorrow,” Peterson said. “It’s not necessarily about winning the region. You want to obviously win the whole thing, but when it comes down to it, it’s about survive and advance and getting to the sectional.” Volunteer0000101-- 2 2 1 Elizabethton001013x-- 5 8 1 Volunteer -- Austin Williams and Greyson Dennis. South Greene Girls Win TSSAA Class A East Sectional; U-High Bucs, Lady Bucs Runner-Up

MARYVILLE, Tenn. -- Drama towards the end of Friday’s TSSAA Class A East sectional outdoor track and field championships at Eagleton Academy’s shiny multi-million dollar facility outside of Maryville propelled the University High’s boys and girls squads into runner-up finishes and three school records. There were nine meet records total broken. The meet started on Wednesday but was suspended for two days after a lengthy weather delay shortly before the end of the field events. South Greene won the girls title with 119 points while Tyner Academy won the boys with 128. University’s girls scored 86 while the boys tallied 87½. Friday was the highest finish ever for the girls and the highest for the boys since winning the old Class A-AA meet in 2009. The controversy came towards the end of the meet as Chattanooga Brainerd freshman Maliyah Rosenberry was disqualified for violating the participation rule and that meant that the Lady Panthers’ 4x100- and 4x400-meter relay that each won did not qualify for the state meet. The 4x100 relay was the fastest in the state this year and will not get to go to the state meet. Rosenberry was also the individual champ in the 100 and 200 dashes and was runner-up in the long jump, but those were wiped away, too. In total, Brainerd missed out on 48 points. The top two finishers in each event automatically qualified for the state meet in Murfreesboro. Two additional at-large bids in each event from across the state determined by best mark will be announced at a later date. BUCS’ BANNER DAY If there was one runner that had a banner day for the Lady Buccaneers, it was sophomore Emma Johnson. She won the 3,200 in a meet record of 12:01.86, smashing the previous mark by 24 seconds and beating the school record. In her earlier race in the 1,600, Johnson was second in the 1,600 (5:35.70) and also broke the school record. One of the key cogs in the wheel was fellow sophomore Dalencia Kittrell. She won the 400 in a meet record of 59.52 and finished third in the 200 in a personal-best (25.84). She’ll be going to her third state meet. “It feels really nice (to go to state for a third year), especially since I won my event this time,” said Kittrell, who won the 400 by over four seconds. “This was my first sectional win. It was hard to compete because I was all by myself. … I was running into the wind in the corner on that 200, too, so I just have to pace myself with them.” The Lady Bucs’ 4x400 relay ended up winning the event in 4:21.28 after Brainerd’s disqualification. On the boys’ side, sophomore Harrison Harker came up big with wins in the 1,600 (4:37.34) and 3,200 (10:21.94). In the longer distance race, teammate Isaac Mussard qualified for the state meet as well, nabbing runner-up (10:22.68). “It feels great (to qualify) and it’s all about getting the best place at this meet,” Harker said. “It feels great to see all the hard work pay off. … I was definitely thinking about getting as many points as we could in my races and that’s why they turned into strategy races so that we could maximize points.” To cap off the banner day, University’s 4x400 relay squad held off defending state champion Tyner Academy down the stretch and won in a school record time of 3:34.51. On Wednesday, James Bailey won the discus (118-4) and teammate Miles Buda was second (115-11¾). The Bucs also won both 4x800 relays on Wednesday before the deluge set in. “It feels great, honestly, to win and to have my teammate qualify with me,” Bailey said, who’s been focusing more on discus rather than a multitude of events like he has in the past. “We’ve worked hard all season and it’s good to see it all pay off in the end. … I feel like focusing (on discus) has paid off in the long run. Focusing on the one event, I’ve seen major improvements.” OTHER INDIVIDUAL LOCAL CHAMPS Happy Valley’s Tyler Bailey won the boys pole vault with a meet record clearance of 11-6. Teammate Kaydence Carroll won the girls triple jump in a meet record of 34-7¼. West Greene senior Abbey Cox won the discus with a toss of 102-6½ and qualified for a fourth state meet. South Greene’s girls 4x200 relay team won in 1:51.37. South Greene’s Heath Norton won the shot put on Wednesday with a heave of 42-5½. OTHER MEET RECORDS In the girls high jump, Sale Creek’s Eisa Eilerston won and tied her own meet record with a clearance of 5-0. Eilerston also won the long jump in a meet record (16-9½). On the boys’ side, Marion County’s Ty Johnson won in meet-record fashion as well (6-4). CSAS’s Fiona Eastman bettered her own meet record in the 100 hurdles, finishing in 15.23. The Tyner Academy boys 4x200 relay broke its own meet record from last year, clocking 1:32.58. MULTIS EARLIER South Greene’s Dion Blair won the decathlon with 4,759 points and Tellico Plains’ Nicholas Hawk was second with 4,747. Chuckey-Doak’s Isaiah Treadway (third, 4,604), Tyner’s Kohl Ward (fourth, 4,550) and Javion Dixson (fifth, 4,506), Pigeon Forge’s Andrew Lewis (sixth, 4,437) and South Greene’s Zackriah Duncan (seventh, 3,955) all earned two of the at-large bids. In the pentathlon, Sale Creek’s Eilertson won with a meet record of 2,581 while South Greene’s Ava Clark was second 2,455. Salem Creek’s Trinity Smith (third, 2,176) along with South Greene’s Natalie Freise (fourth, 2,081) and Alexa Gabbard (fifth, 2,056) earned at-large berths. TSSAA Class A East Sectional Track & Field Championships Eagleton College and Career Academy, Maryville Wednesday, May 8 and Friday, May 10 **Top two in each event automatically advance to the Class A state meet in Murfreesboro. Top two non-automatic qualifiers from across the state also advance to the state meet.
